Remote Control the Mac

leave a comment »

Remote management is no longer a mere convenience but rather a requirement in IT environments.  The Dell KACE K1000 and K2000 appliances offer remote tools for Windows and Mac computers.

Dell KACE has two appliances that allow you to manage and deploy Macs.  One feature I would like to share with you this month is the ability to control Mac’s during deployment using the K2000.

Go to the Settings and Maintenance module on your K2000 and then click General Settings.  The Machine Actions listed can perform pre-configured actions against remote machines.  Remote control of Windows PC’s is the default action.  What about your Mac’s?  On a K2000 edit Action Icon #2 and insert the following command: vnc://KACE_HOST_IP

Now you have remote control of the Mac during the deployment on your K2000!

As a side note, the same command works on the K1000.  However, you need to have VNC present in your environment.  Mac OS X already has VNC (SSH) installed however, it may require configuration.  The K1000 has a scripting module preconfigured with a scripting wizard that facilitates easy deployment of VNC in your environment.
